Nazarite Vow Nazarite - separated, consecrated Vow found in Numbers 6. " There was no restriction on who could take this vow. " General time-frame for the vow according to Jewish tradition was 30, 60, or 90-100 days. " There were three "Nazarites for life" in the Bible 1. Samson (Judges 13:4-5) 2. Samuel (I Samuel 1:11) 3. John the Baptist (Luke 1:15) " Conditions of the Nazarite Vow 1. Abstinence from wine, strong drink, or any fruit of the vine (grapes, juice, raisins) 2. Abstinence from cutting his hair or shaving 3. Abstinence from touching or coming near a dead body. " The Conclusion of the Nazarite Vow 1. At the tabernacle of congregation, the Nazarite must offer one male lamb of the first year without blemish for a burnt offering, one female lamb of the first year without blemish for a sin offering, and one ram without blemish for a peace offering. 2. He shall offer unleavened bread for a meat offering as well as a drink offering. 3. He shall shave his head and throw his hair upon the offering fire. 4. The Nazarite shall touch the ram sacrifice and the meat offering after his head is shaved. 5. The Nazarite then drinks wine. " The Correlation of the Nazarite Vow and the Christian walk 1. The Nazarite must not drink strong drink, so he will be only controlled by God's Spirit and so must the Christian follow the Holy Spirit alone. 2. The Nazarite must have the locks of his hair as an outward sign of his consecration to God. A Christian must also live a sanctified life that others may see his life and glorify God. 3. The Nazarite was not to touch the dead carcass, or any unclean thing, and so must we abstain from those things which defile us. Whereas the Nazarite would normally do this for a specified amount of time, a Christian is "consecrated for life!" |
