John the Baptist

"The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway
for our God. Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be
made straight, and the rough places plain: And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it
together: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it. The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass,
and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field: The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of
the Lord bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass. The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God
shall stand for ever." - Isaiah 40:3-8

"And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness
to see? A reed shaken with the wind? But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that
wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than
a prophet. For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy
way before thee. Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the
Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. And from the days of John the
Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. For all the prophets and the
law prophesied until John. And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come. He that hath ears to hear, let him
hear." - Matthew 11:7-15

"A dwarf on a mountain is higher than the giant in the valley." - Matthew Henry

In other words, it was the dispensation of the kingdom of heaven that was exceptional, not the individuals within it.

"If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true. There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the
witness which he witnesseth of me is true. Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth. But I receive not
testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved. He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were
willing for a season to rejoice in his light. But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father
hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me. And the Father
himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his
shape." - John 5:31-37

"Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him. He that hath the bride is
the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the
bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled. He must increase, but I must decrease." - John 3:28-30
