His Story: The Book of Job

Job - "Foe or Hostile One"

Time Period (Approx.) - 1520 B.C.

Best known For: He was a man who was blameless and upright, yet suffered like no other in the Bible, except, perhaps,
Jesus Christ. Through his suffering, however, he remained faithful to God.


Outline of Job's Life

I. Job is described as an upright and wealthy man (1:1-5)

II. Job is assaulted by Satan through the loss of his wealth and children (1:6-22)

III. Job is assaulted by Satan a second time through the loss of his health (2:1-13)

IV. Job is "comforted" by his friends, who try to tell him why God has cursed him (c.3-37)

V. God confronts Job personally (c.38-41)

VI. God delivers Job (c.42)


Lessons to be learned from Job's life:

1. Job's blameless character was noticed by God (c1:8)

2. Job's faith did not lie in his possessions, and that was proven by the removal of them (c.1)

3. Job's response to the loss of his wealth and children was worship (1:21)

4. Job was aware that if we receive blessings from God, we also need to be able to receive adversity (2:10)

5. The reason for our suffering is not always knowable.

6. We must be careful to pass judgment on other people's hardships because we may do more harm than good.

7. God is sovereign.

8. God will deliver us from our distresses if we are faithful to Him.

9. We can draw strength and wisdom from our hardships.
