“Psalm 23” I.The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want. The Lord – Yahweh, Jehovah – self existent or eternal Shepherd – leader, provider, protector, reprover, friend, savior (John 10:11) I shall not want – we shall not lack anything good for us, because our shepherd will provide. “I shall be supplied with whatever I need; and if I have not everything I desire, I may conclude it is neither fit for me or not good for me, or I shall have it in due time.” - Matthew Henry II.Green Pastures and Still Waters “Well Placed” Green Pastures – we lie down in contentment and feed on God's goodness both physically and spiritually. Even if it is little, we enjoy it with such fervor because we know where it comes from. “Well led” Still Waters – we are led by the Holy Spirit where our thirst is quenched in the cool clean waters of God's spring. III.Restored Soul in Righteousness Restores my soul – we tend to wander and he leads us back He instructs us in ways of righteousness and tells us of our duty for glory to God. He is faithful to bring us back when we wander and teach us the way to walk. IV.The Valley of the Shadow of Death The valley of the shadow of death – in the midst of dangers The shadow of death only appears dangerous, but we walk through it with God's help, for He is with us. The shepherds rod and staff protected the sheep from predators, and God protects us from being prey to the enemy. V.Prepared Table and Anointing Oil A Prepared Table – God bountifully provides for us, and has the table prepared. He simply states, “come and dine...feed on my food which is sufficient for life and godliness”...my cup runneth over. Anointing Oil – Being anointed with oil is a sign of God's blessing, which believers all have. It is a great privilege to be blessed by God. VI.The Continuance of God's Favor “Surely” - the confidence of David Goodness and mercy will fallow me all the days of my life (it will not run out) We will dwell in his house and presence now and in eternity we will be with him forever. |
